Here are a couple of good sites for info.
BeaPilot.com and LearnToFly.com
How much does it cost to learn to fly?
That really depends on each individual. The average person will spend about $4500 during a period of about 6 months to a year.
What do I have to do to get a Private Pilot (airplane) license?
The FAA says you have to have a minimum of 40 hours in an airplane, 20 of which must be with a flight instructor. The average person will have about 30 hours with their flight instructor and about 60 hours total in an airplane. You must be at least 16 years old and have a current FAA physical to solo (fly the airplane alone) and be 17 years old to take the flight test. You must also have the FAA Private Pilot written test passed before taking the flight test.
What are some good books I can read?
There are several good training manuals which will do just fine. I like the books written by William K. Kershner and Jeppesen products. Kershner writes with humor and I think it makes learning easier. I use Jeppesen in my ground school. The FAA also prints some good books. You can find them at most airports at the general aviation portion of the airport. There is also a very good pilot shop at the St. Paul Downtown airport. This shop is located at Regency on the south west side of the airport.
Is the flying club the best way to learn to fly?
If you're asking one of the people in the club they would say yes, but it really depends on you. We have several very nice airplanes which are very well maintained but if you don't do much flying the club can be a little more expensive than other options. The club is aimed at people that fly a lot. You must decide how much you plan to fly and look at the costs of the club and that of the local Fixed Base Operators. If your training, it's tough to beat the club!
How do I pick a flight instructor?
Here in Rochester there are several fine flight instructors. You should visit with a few of them and "feel them out." You must get along with them. If your personality and the flight instructors doesn't "jell" then you should think about someone else. (Don't think you can't change flight instructors at any time (remember they work for you).) Your flight instructor will become a good friend but he/she will also be your biggest critic.
What time of the year is the best time to start training?
Really about any time is fine, however, the summer months are a little more comfortable on your body but the airplane flies much better in the winter.
